You know, the older I get, the more I feel drawn towards historical tabletops. Perhaps it’s a sign I am finally maturing? Nay… it’s probably just a broadening of my horizon, so to speak… after all, the only sign that I am finally growing up are my usual symptoms of a full-grown Midlife Crisis…
But back to the subject! One of my best friends – I sometimes call him “Boswell” on this Blog – is finally dropping by for a visit the coming month. I think I haven’t seen him in person for six or seven years, quite some time… we mail and chat a lot about wargaming and tabletops, but it will be great to meet him in person and have one or two sessions with him. There will be blood for sure… and paint. He is a much better painter than I am and I am sure I will benefit a lot from painting something with him.
About what we will paint together… well, after such a long time we had a loooong wishlist… 30 positions, to be honest. All kind of stuff from 40K to Dreadfleet, from Dystopian Wars to Pike & Shotte… well, yesterday we finally settled for our project: Flames of War.
As readers of my blog (and you are avid readers, are you not?) you surely know I got hold of the 2nd Edition Flames of War starterset last year… a beautiful set indeed. Wrote a longish review on that one… afterwards, unfortunately, things never quite worked out, mostly because friend Boswell and I couldn’t settle for a period to start with… we talked about North Africa, Greece, Poland, Normandy… and of course there is always a certain insecurity on my part when working – especially painting – with 15 mm miniatures… I just feel better with 28 mm…
Anyway, somethings things go quickly – we settled for Flames of War AND for a period and theatre of war, that is the Eastern Front…
As I dislike playing Nazis, I will first work on a Soviet army. Looking forward to that one. And a fine thing I managed to cheaply pick up some blisters of Soviet miniatures when a store in Munich decided to discontinue selling FoW products. I don’t think they make up a good (or even remotely official) soviet army, but hey, they’re a starting point!
Of course I will keep you posted on that one…
